Giving birth should be your greatest achievement, not your greatest fear.
Hi and welcome to La Luna Birth Collective!
My name is Meme (it’s pronounced like Mimi) and I’m a birth & postpartum doula, a Hypnobirthing International educator and a photographer specialising in maternity, birth, newborn, motherhood and family photography. I’m originally from a little hippy town called Sedona in the USA, and moved to Australia in 2015 to follow my heart. I had fallen in love with a wonderful Australian man who is now my husband. I’ve been living in the Southern Gold Coast/ Northern NSW region ever since and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
I have been supporting births as a doula and documenting them as a photographer since the end of 2017, and completed my Hypnobirthing International Practitioner’s training at the end of 2018. Working with pregnant and birthing women and new mums is a calling I feel deep in my soul, and you can see how it lights up my whole being if you get me talking about anything birth related. My dream is to help as many women and babies as possible to have positive, empowering birth experiences so they start their relationship, the mum’s journey of motherhood and the baby’s new life, from a place of power, love and wholeness.
My philosophy – protecting birth in a medicalised system:
I believe in women’s bodies, and I KNOW that the natural processes of birth function best when undisturbed. As a doula and HypnoBirthing educator, part of my role is to teach you everything I know that gives me this unwavering trust in natural birth, so that you reach that level of trust, too. From there, it’s a matter of navigating the systems in place around birthing, which is no small feat. No matter where you choose to birth, I will help you to understand what to expect and prepare you to advocate for the birth you want. As your doula, I will be with you every step of the way, holding space for you, helping you to remain grounded, and supporting your wishes for your birth. If you have a partner who will be present at the birth, I will work with him/her beforehand to be your most valuable support person and advocate, helping to ensure that this birth will bring you closer than ever before and strengthen your love for one another.
I’m now a Mumma myself.
My baby girl, Lua Kai Tuohy, was born at home in October 2019. I had an incredibly peaceful, gentle and beautiful birth experience with absolutely no intervention, and I attribute it entirely to all of my knowledge and physical and mental preparation. Most of all, I felt empowered to make the best decisions for myself and my baby, and I trusted my body and the process of birth. I believe so deeply that I wasn’t “just lucky” – it was something that I prepared for long before I ever became pregnant, and I fiercely protected my birth space and mindset from negativity and unnecessary intervention. I believe that this positive birth is something I achieved, and I am so passionate about helping others to achieve their dream births, too!
